Goodness! It’s not everyday one
gets to board an ocean vessel. Let alone be it an enormous ship that belongs to
some navy. Which is what I did, Friday, 7 February 2014, thanks to my dear
friend Fehraad de Nicker and Pirelli.
The Italian navy’s aircraft
carrier, The Cavour, was the unmistakeable venue to what turned out to be one
of Pirelli’s most historical milestones: the launch of the 50th
Anniversary Pirelli Calendar. With a sun-kissed Cape Town and cloud-lined Table
Mountain as the superb backdrop, Pirelli brought on the sophistication,
glamour, glitz, tailoring, and quality production they are now so synonymous
for.
There was a select number of
guests invited, probably no more than 80, composed of media, officials, local
celebrities, and key stakeholders. The venue, carefully laid out to ensure its
overwhelming size did not consume the day-into-evening’s proceedings. There
were fast paced Italian cars flanking the Cavour, all of course sporting
Pirelli tyres. It was truly an incredible experience.
The 50th Anniversary
Calendar is the undeniably both vintage and collectable 1986 unpublished
calendar that was shot by world-renowned photographer, Helmut Newton, a man
known greatly for impeccable, sensual and provocative images. It’s as much sexy
as it is classic. A calendar one could keep for eternity. To close off the
evening, Pirelli had organized a stunt-infused showcase by extreme motorcycle
rider, Brian Capper, and cocktails and dinner on the upper deck to an
electrifying Cape Town backdrop lit up like a Christmas tree.
All in all, I was
thoroughly impressed. Well-done Pirelli.
