2017 has
produced yet another African surf and turf brand – Mami Wata, meaning “Mother
Ocean” in West African pidgin. The Cape Town-based beachwear apparel,
accessories and surf board brand, birthed by business partners Peet Pienaar and
Nick Dutton. The local brand seeks to instil a little bit of Africa in every
garment and wearer, dubbing itself as ‘the world’s first great African surf
brand’.
“From
Madagascar to Morocco, Liberia to Mozambique, Mami Wata is the African water
spirit who appears in the shape of a mermaid. It is said that those who she
takes for her lovers, return with a new spirit and become more successful and
good looking,” smiles Nick Dutton, co-founder of Mami Wata Surf.
"We’re passionate about
Africa, surf and design. Africa’s got some of the world’s best waves, yet there
aren’t any brands telling that story. Africa is the new frontier, not just
of surf exploration. The continent has fostered many indigenous surfing
cultures and this is a great story to tell. We want to take our locally made
and designed surf gear and apparel to the world,” he continues.
The Mami Wata range
includes a number of lifestyle products, ranging from hand-crafted surfboards,
to surf apparel and even coffee, all built to last and to survive an African
surf adventure. Every Mami Wata product is sourced, designed and produced in
Africa.
The brand and all fabrics
have been created by renowned designer and co-founder Peet Pienaar. All are
inspired by the seduction and freedom of Africa, while referencing current
global fashion trends promoting electric and flashy textiles with floral and
geometric patterns.
I managed to
somehow get a media drop, which included board shorts, a tee, stickers and some
home-grown coffee beans. We’ve shared some images from the look book for you.
You can find the entire collection via the Mami Wata website – http://mamiwata.surf/ and you can follow the brand
on social media via www.facebook.com/mamiwatasurf/ and www.instagram.com/mamiwatasurf/.
