Tomorrow
marks the official 3 week countdown race to this year’s SA Menswear Week
showcasing AW17 collections by 31 designers and brands over 17 runway showcases
during a 4-day fashion week experience. The anticipation is high, as we have
return contenders who have time and again proven their value to the showcase,
set aside against newcomers who have some shoes to fill, considering they are
inadvertently replacing designers who were in previous seasons showcasing and
this year are not.
Favourites
for Renaissance who are back on the schedule include Jeneive Lyons – a brand
synonymous with asymmetry, forward-thinking, social messaging and innovation.
We also have designers/brands such as Imprint, Dicker and Blanc – who constantly
push their own boundaries, tell native stories and entertain with an array of
character and attitude. From outside our own borders: Maxivive, Orange Culture
and Mai Atafo bring an African energy fused with out-of-the-box thinking and
closed off with tailoring and articulate finishes.
This
season’s misses include Chulaap, who is unofficially reported to be skipping
this season to bring a holistically more creative aesthetic for a SS17 show
later this year. Mo’Ko Elosa and Lukhanyo Mdingi, ELLE Rising Design Star
finalists are also missing in action – hopefully back in studio working on
bigger and better collections. Magents, Ruald Rheeder, Augustine – also not on
the schedule. We tensely hope this is not their end for SAMW, but merely a
deserved break to step away to create something even great for local fashion to
be experienced later seasons.
Regardless
of who is present and accounted for and who is not, we’re excited to see a full
schedule and we welcome the new designers who will be giving us something fresh
(we hope) to experience. As the time draws closer, we’ll be profiling designers
and brands, new ones especially, to give you some form of insight as to what to
possibly expect.
Remember:
SAMW will take place at Cape Town Stadium, 1-4 February 2017. Tickets will be
available on WebTickets from 16 January 2017. Make sure to follow us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for
constant updates leading up to the event, during the event and post fashion
week.
