The Renaissance: Abdullah Ibrahim Giveaway

#ABDULLAH IBRAHIM
17 - 30 Movember 2011

Made in Austria, produced by Joachim Baker, Sotho Blue presents Abdullah Ibrahim teaming up with Ekaya to create a stunning new jazz CD. For music made so far from his birth place, Cape Town, South Africa, Sotho Blue has an incredibly home-based sound. So much so, it render images of dusky streets, kids playing soccer and men trekking towards the station, a taxi or bus stop in the early honey mornings on their work to work.

Abdullah Ibrahim was a last minute introduction to me by a close friend. I have never since forgotten to keep tabs on the man. On occasion making an extra effort to read up on him for additional knowledge, and mostly making sure I always get a copy of his latest release. Sotho Blue brings to the ears a new tasty sound, others have commented reminiscent of his earlier works inspired by Duke Ellington and The Onius Monk.

Back then, Dollar Brand as he was known, was not written to be this great. But today, Abdullah Ibrahim has music students writing their thesis on him and only him and how he has influenced the sound of jazz through the years and how he has changed certain perceptions of the industry.

As a personal moment of sharing, we're giving away three copies of the Sotho Blue album, to three Renaissance Men in South Africa.

All you have to do is pop us an email - info@therenaissancemen.co.za - with "Abdullah Ibrahim" in the subject, your name, contact number and city in the body, and the CD is yours.
