It’s a tough challenge to find
emerging talent on the continent of Africa. I’m not sure whether it’s because
some designers are not yet online, or maybe someone people are still too
cautious about sharing their information before they’ve made it big. Or maybe
people just don’t like responding to requests for information on emerging
designers… Regardless, when I do find someone new bringing the African flavour
to consumers, packing some heat, I have to share.
Mateke (MTK) Brand Mark, is a
fashion house which specializes in the designing and production of unisex
ready-to-wear collections. Established 10 February 2012, the brand is young and
making their mark through online marketing means. Officially launched April 27,
Head Designer, Fatima Charmaine Mekgwe, has managed to get herself noticed more
than enough by showcasing at both the Colour In The Desert Fashion 2012 event
and at Gaborone Fashion Weekend 2012.
Fatima’s designs are casual
with a quirky twist. Using cottons and durable daywear materials, she mixes
them with indigenous fabrics and interesting cuts to create something special
for those of us who take to the streets everyday. MTK also presents a more
tailored set of pieces, especially for the gents, that allows you to slip from
office to sundowners without breaking much of a sweat.
As always, it’s forever
encouraging to see young talent popping onto the scene and to find them
producing quality products over large quantities of crap. We trust MTK Brand
Mark’s appearances at the two recent fashion events marks the beginning of
further appearances on such platforms and also garners even more support than
they currently have.
