The inaugural Zeitz MOCAA Gala, held on
Saturday, 28 February 2015, was a glamorously African affair that saw 320
guests make their red-carpet arrival in show-stopping style. The Gala took
place at the Silo 1 building in the Silo District of Cape Town’s V&A
Waterfront, opposite the site of Zeitz MOCAA, the continent’s first
contemporary art museum, which opens early 2017.
The Gala was held to honour
the major donors to this significant new cultural institution, while proceeds
from the high-profile fundraiser, which will become an annual event, will help
to ensure the museum is accessible to all.
Guests, who were drawn from the arts,
fashion, entertainment and business professions, were treated to a formal
seated dinner and vibrant entertainment.
They showed off their black tie finery
amid an exclusive exhibition of couture presented by the first four designers
to be honoured by the newly announced Zeitz MOCAA Costume Institute: Chris
Levin, Marianne Fassler, Gavin Rajah and Thula Sindi.
The Gala’s theme was Contemporary
Africa, Future Africa, in recognition of Zeitz MOCAA being a project dedicated
to the whole of Africa and its Diaspora.
