Bastion is a unique new menswear label created by industry talent, Lauren Kotze and Nikki St. Quintin, available exclusively in Cape Town. The colours and fabrics are inspired by nature, the beautiful Mother City and the people who walk its streets.

Bastion focuses on a holistic approach to the entire design process, from raw material to local manufacturing, helping to promote South African business practices. The brand stays true to the significance of its name - an institution, place, or person strongly defending or upholding particular principles, attitudes, or activities.

"Lauren and I were at the re-launch of Baseline in Long Street and it got us thinking about the huge gap in the market for local, distinctive, quality menswear in South Africa. The label was conceptualized with our boyfriends, guy friends and their friends in mind – clothing for the guys’ guy. He is fashionable, but not a slave to trends. He likes quality and fit as well as reasonable prices, he loves the outdoors and lives an active lifestyle. He is your brother, father, friend and boyfriend," commented Nikki.

Supporting the use of natural fabrics, Bastion is made up primarily of Hemp and Hemp/cotton/linen blends. Hemp lends itself to be softer, warmer, breathable, more water resistant and a more durable fabric than cotton. Because of its superior qualities, Hemp fabric will help one keep warm in winter and cool in summer.

Nikki further added, "It was also important for us to not only separate ourselves from what’s out there at the moment, but to do so in a way that was gentle on the environment – and so the use of hemp and natural fabrics became a core philosophy in our business.”

Although the use of hemp is only a small segment of the Global Warming solution, many believe that it is the only known renewable natural resource that can meet nearly all our requirements to move back to a healthier, greener planet.
