The countdown has begun for the
highly anticipated Spring/Summer Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg 2016
(MBFWJ16), taking place from the 10th-13thAugust 2016 at
Nelson Mandela Square, Sandton City. What better way is there to kick off this
glamorous event than with a David Tlale show?
David Tlale is a home-grown fashion
hero and will be showcasing nine exciting designers in The Intern, on the red
hot MBFWJ16 runway. From this talented group only one name will be chosen as
the winner, to be announced on the night. Under the vastly experienced tutelage
of David Tlale, the winner is sure to have a bright future in fashion.
“We’re thrilled to be opening the
show with such a powerful force in the industry and we can’t wait to see what
David’s protégés have in store for us,” says Jan Malan, production director of
MBFWJ16. “While The Intern is a huge highlight, we have another four
show-stopping productions that are going to electrify our audience.”
Nandi Mngoma impressed US fashion
critics at the BET Awards when she walked the red carpet in one of her own
designs. She is collaborating with local designer Inga Madyibi to bring you
Colour, and it promises to be a social media feast.
In a nod to modest fashion, and to
highlight African Fashion International’s (AFI) commitment to inclusivity, one
of the most interesting shows at MBFWJ16 will be Bulbulia Threads by Tasleem
Bulbulia. In a fashion first, Tasleem will bring the glamour of Islamic Couture
to the runway.
Two industries combine in AFI
FastrackTM, as Lee-ché Janecke takes over the reins as producer. As
a member of the V.I.N.T.A.G.E dance crew, Janecke will bring his own creative
flair to the show. For the first time the AFI FastrackTM finalists
will be paired with a celebrity to create a unique collection, with the winner
being announced on Saturday 13th August. This year’s finalists
are innovative, edgy and show a strong social conscious, all of which are
essential for the development of fashion on the continent. The electrifying
line-up features Chesney Williams pairing up with DJ Zinhle to bring you Street
Bohemian, Buda and DJ Tira with Afro Street, and Tayla Mgukos joins forces with
Minnie Dlamini to introduce Sports Chic.
“We’re delighted with the line-up for
day one and believe it’s the perfect platform for newcomers to show the world
what they’re capable of. Everyone is working incredibly hard to pull off this
production, so Joburg better be prepared for a fashionably fabulous event,”
says Malan.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg SS 2016 is organised and curated by
AFI, the gateway to refined African fashion. Reaffirming AFI’s role as a
pioneer in fashion on the continent, MBFWJ16 will for the first time feature a
widely inclusive collection of established and upcoming pan-African designers
and models.
